Emergency Unberthing without Tug Assistance
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Shipmasters may have to perform unberthing without tugboat assistance when a tsunami warning is issued. Keeping this in mind, we studied emergency unberthing without tug assistance by conducting numerical simulations and full‐mission ship maneuvering simulator (SMS) experiments. A panamax class medium‐sized bulker and a pure car carrier (PCC) were used as test ships. In the experiments, we established the limitations of basic shiphandling techniques such as stern kick out, backing, and accelerating turn in windy conditions using a mathematical modeling group (MMG)‐type mathematical maneuvering model. On the basis of the results, we produced a shiphandling scenario and evaluated it using SMS experiments. We concluded that unberthing without tug assistance in 5 m/s onshore winds is possible. Furthermore, the use of thrusters can greatly reduce the time required for unberthing. http://www.transnav.eu the International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation Volume 9

متن کاملComparison of balance assessment modalities in emergency department elders: a pilot cross-sectional observational study
BACKGROUND More than one-third of US adults 65 and over fall every year. These falls may cause serious injury including substantial long-term morbidity (due declines in activities of daily living) and death. The emergency department (ED) visit represents an opportunity for identifying high risk elders and potentially instituting falls-related interventions. The unique characteristic of the ED e...
متن کاملThe Timed Up and Go Test does not predict length of stay on an acute geriatric ward.
This study aimed to determine whether the admission Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) predicted the length of stay of patients in an acute geriatric ward. Consecutive patients were quasi-randomly allocated to either a model development sample or a model validation sample. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression was used to model length of stay. Variables considered for inclusion in the develo...
متن کاملAssessing functional recovery shortly after knee or hip arthroplasty: a comparison of the clinimetric properties of four tools
BACKGROUND Following hip or knee arthroplasty, it is clinically warranted to get patients functional as quickly as possible. However, valid tools to assess function shortly after knee or hip arthroplasty are lacking. The objective was to compare the clinimetric properties of four instruments to assess function shortly after arthroplasty. METHODS One hundred eight patients undergoing hip or kn...
متن کاملUltrasound assistance for central venous catheter placement in a pediatric emergency department improves placement success rates.
OBJECTIVES The use of ultrasound (US) has been shown to improve success rates and reduce complications of central venous catheter (CVC) placement in adult emergency department (ED) patients. The authors sought to determine if US assistance for CVC placement is associated with an increased success rate in pediatric ED patients. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of CVC placement in ...
